Winter Weed Arrest

In Kentucky, we have a reputation for being excellent farmers. There’s hardly a commercial crop we don’t grow here. Including marijuana – said to be one of the largest cash crops in the state. Like other crops, there’s a season for marijuana and all the outdoor stuff is long harvested by late December. But a bust in outside of Glasgow, in Barren County, tells a different tale.

State Police arrested three after receiving a tip about a barn in the rural area. The barn had been converted into an indoor marijuana growing operation on a grand scale. With more than a thousand plants seized, it represents a major bust for law enforcement. Along with the plants, $21,000 was seized (the plants were valued at more than $2 million!).

It’s likely the police will also end up with the “toys” found on the property – the assumption is they were purchased with drug money. They include computers, pickup trucks, an ATV, a tractor, a box trailer, two commercial mowers and various power tools. (Not sure exactly how the mowers would be used here.)

In Kentucky, the charge is cultivation if you grow five or more plants. The three arrested were way past that minimum. One of the group, Dallas Norris, 69, is well known to the police. He had charges added: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and being a persistent felony offender, first degree. That latter charge is a huge problem – it carries up to 50 years in prison (20 years minimum).

Remember, a tip brought the police into it. Which makes you wonder about all those barns set back from the road – any dirt road at all, anywhere in Kentucky. There’s plenty of room in them… and we are very good at farming.
